COVID-19 Vaccine
At Malek Medicine, your health and safety are our top priority. This is why we are now offering the COVID-19 vaccine to everyone age 5 and up.
- Currently two types of vaccines are available: Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and Moderna vaccine.
- Children ages 5 are now eligible for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. (By appointment a week in advance only).
CDC recommends everyone 5 years and older should get a COVID-19 vaccination to help protect against COVID-19. Widespread vaccination is a critical tool to help stop the pandemic. People who are fully vaccinated can resume activities that they did prior to the pandemic. Learn more about what you and your child or teen can do when you have been fully vaccinated. Children 12 years and older are able to get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.
All children 12 and older in Los Angeles public schools must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by January to enter campus. This student mandate was the next logical step to keep children, staff and community members safer from a COVID-19 pandemic that still poses significant risks.
If you have not yet received your first dose of the vaccine, please don’t delay.

Second Booster Shots
Based on expanded FDA EUAs, the following individuals may receive a second booster dose at least four months after their first booster dose:
- People 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised
- People 50 years and older who are not moderately or severely immunocompromised
- People 18-49 years old who are not moderately or severely immunocompromised and who received Janssen COVID-19 vaccine as both their primary series dose and booster dose
COVID-19 Booster Shots
There are now booster recommendations for all three available COVID-19 vaccines in the United States. COVID-19 Vaccine Recipients Ages 12 and Older Are Eligible for Booster Shots. Some people may have a preference for the vaccine type that they originally received, and others may prefer to get a different booster. CDC’s recommendations now allow for this type of mix and match dosing for booster shots.

ABOUT THE MODERNA CORONAVIRUS VACCINE
Malek Medicine is part of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine’s distribution efforts, as it becomes available in LA County, California.
Moderna has produced an mRNA vaccine intended to prevent the development of COVID-19 in the population. It is the second vaccine candidate that the US Food and Drug Administration authorized for use. The FDA granted Moderna an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for its mRNA vaccine on December 18, 2020.
Moderna’s clinical trials indicated that the vaccine is 94.1% effective at preventing COVID-19 illness in those who received both doses. The Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine requires two doses, taken one month (28 days) apart. According to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC), the shots are administered in the upper arm muscle, where post-injection swelling and pain may occur.
Side effects could include fever, chills, headache, and tiredness that may affect your ability to perform daily tasks. According to the CDC, these are signs that your body is reacting to the vaccine as intended.
How can I protect myself against the Delta variant?
The most important thing you can do to protect yourself from Delta is to get fully vaccinated. That means if you get a two-dose vaccine like Pfizer or Moderna, for example, you must get both shots and then wait the recommended two-week period for those shots to take full effect.
Experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are continuing to study the Delta variant. They have concluded that COVID-19 vaccines offer good protection against COVID-19 variants. People who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 are most at risk.
IF I HAVE ALREADY HAD COVID-19, DO I STILL NEED TO GET VACCINATED?
Yes, you do need the vaccine even if you have had COVID-19. We don’t yet know how long you are protected after you have had COVID-19, so it is important to have the vaccine to strengthen your immunity. It is safe to get the vaccine after getting COVID-19 but you should wait until after your isolation period is over. This is so that you don’t infect healthcare workers and others when you go to get vaccinated. If you have had monoclonal antibody treatment, you should wait for 90 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine.
CAN PEOPLE WITH WEAK IMMUE SYSTEMS GET A COVID-19 VACCINE?
Yes. Studies of the current COVID-19 vaccines did not include people with weak immune systems, so we don’t know how well the vaccine will work in these people. We do know that people with weak immune systems are at higher risk of getting COVID-19 if they are exposed to it. If they get COVID-19 they are more likely to become very sick. They are advised to talk to their doctor about getting the vaccine
The studies did include people with stable HIV and people with active cancer and found that the vaccine was as safe and effective for this group as it was for other people in the studies.
CAN PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES GET A COVID-19 VACCINE?
Information about allergic reactions may change. Be sure to check the latest guidance on the CDC COVID-19 Vaccines and Allergic Reactions webpage and talk to your doctor.
Can my 12-15 child receive the COVID-19 vaccine at Malek Medicine?
Yes, all children ages 12-15 are eligible to receive the Pfizer BioNTech, provided there is parental or legal guardian consent and the child is accompanied by an adult.
Because the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine is currently the only authorized vaccine for children in this age group, please make an appointment a week in advance to ensure there is adequate supply and availability.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER GETTING A COVID-19 VACCINE?
On the arm where you get the shot:

Throughout the rest of your body:

WHAT CAN I DO NOW TO HELP PROTECT MYSELF FROM GETTING COVID-19 UNTIL IT IS MY TURN TO GET A VACCINE?

- Cover your mouth and nose with a face covering when around others
